How it works!

The Orange Route - 78 mi

This route is an excellent option for a family day trip with the kids. Including Mt. Rushmore, there's over 25 attractions ranging from outdoor animal parks to deep dark caves. There's also lots of shopping and dinning along the way as you pass through Keystone, Hill City, and Rapid City.

Central Black Hills

8 am- 9am - Travel to Ft. Hays, Dances with Wolves Film Set for 99 cent all you can eat pancakes plus other menu items served on a cowboy tin plate.  Visit old workshops and film set from Dances with Wolves. Make reservations for the Chuckwagon Supper/Show.

9am -11am - Travel to Rapid City to visit over 10 parks, attractions, and museums.  Start at the Journey Museum for a 1 hour SmartAlec Adventure Guide scenic tour of the town or ride the Rapid City Trolley. You'll learn about the history of Rapid City while seeing it's scenic side!  Spend time at each of the stops on the route. If you are in your own car you can go at your own pace, but if you are on the trolley, it won't return to that location for at least 1 hour. There's plenty to do at all the stops so don't worry about that!

11am - 2pm - Visit attractions on Hwy 16 towards Mt. Rushmore.  Get up close and personal at animal parks like Bear Country USA, Reptile Gardens and Old McDonalds Farm.  If you're looking for an underground adventure visit Sitting Bull Crystal Cave or the beautiful Rushmore Cave near Keystone.  Great places to amuse the whole family are the Black Hills Maze, Puts & Glow, and the Ranch Amusement Park.

If you like to hike, visit the Stratowbowl Rim trail to discover where history was made or hike the Flume Trail near Rockerville, an real gold mining ghost town.

3pm - 6pm -Travel to Hill City, SD to catch a ride on the 1880 train! Check train schedule for departures.  A 2 hour trip (1 hour each way) that winds through the Black Hills between Keystone and Hill City, SD.

6pm - 8pm In Hill City, enjoy a famous steak dinner at the popular Alpine Inn or visit other local eateries.  Wander down Main Stret along the old board walk visiting boutique stores known for fine art and jewelry.

8pm - 10pm  Travel to Mt. Rushmore for the evening Lighting Ceremony. Park Rangers present a 30 minute multi-media presentation with a grand finale lighting of the monument.
